What the Newsletter is all about
The
Brown Sheet is a subscription service for fiber generators of waste
corrugated, lower grade fibers and office paper produced by homeowners
and offices. It reports pricing that up until now seemed somewhat
mysterious of how the prices are determined each month. The twice
monthly newsletter concentrates on 6 different regions of the
United States to find the high price in that area being paid for
baled products in full semi load quantities. The Brown Sheet also
factors in premiums being paid for consistent sales direct to mills that
have to count on minimum amounts of tonnage needed monthly. There are
few sales that go direct to Mill buyers because the system has been
setup to allow middle men known as brokers to scalp $5 to $20
per ton in order to arrange transportation and guarantee quality of the
product, that is why brokers make calls on facilities 2 to 3 times per
year. But for those generators able to break past and cut out the middle
man they are rewarded with a $5 to $15 premium - which are never posted
on released rate sheets you see from your broker.
The
Brown Sheet is prepared for Generators and influenced by what
subscribers pass on in order to assemble regional information.
Individuals, companies and recyclers can help structure pricing trends
by sharing information instead of having the pricing dictated to them.
The Brown Sheet also interviews buyers but factors their rates per past
performance. The rate you will see is Mill Direct without the middle man
involved. These rates are paid F.O.B. at the generators dock door loaded per
mill specifications on semi trailers in 22 ton loads.
The
premise for forming The Brown Sheet was developed to be an information
exchange. It came about from email that was received from the
web pages of our sister website
www.recycleguy.com. Visitors there found the
How to Recycle
Corrugated Cardboard
informative and actually wanted more information than was being given.
The main question coming from first time Recyclers seemed to be how do I
reduce the waste stream to lower the company waste service costs. The
answer to that was easy, conduct a trash audit and start pulling out
recyclables such as uncontaminated corrugated from trash bins and
recycling it. Now that they have invested in balers and are recycling
they want to know what value it has and how to get the best price, some
are even far enough along to ask how those monthly prices are
determined. Not many know that there are 6 to 10 different regions of
the United States, Lower Canada and Northern Mexico who also operate off
of U.S. pricing.
The
Brown Sheet is the start of something innovative. It is a cooperative where
recyclers feed in pricing that form trends in order to determine demand. It allow producers to be
vested with the knowledge to haggle with the buyer about the price and
terms they are receiving for their baled fiber products. The twice
monthly publication is a short newsletter which helps inform producers
of price changes for corrugated and low grades of fiber products and
what current market conditions are and possibly will be in the future.
